April 16 - The Car Show

April 16 - The Car Show

Ah, the motorshow.

Nothing quite like letting your 4 year old run around at full tilt, getting in every car he can, standing on all the seats, and telling his father to get in the back seat because he, the 4 year old, “has to go to work”.

Do you think I’ve been explaining what I do to my child too much?  Probably.  But, he does guilt me pretty good about going to work, so I figure he ought to know about it.

So anyhow, we took the bus, then the LRT down to the Coliseum.  Along the way, we saw a couple of fire trucks and some construction going on downtown.

I think that by the time we got to car show, Riley was done, but he’s such a trooper, he soldiered on and tried to run every car salesman’s day by applying the special Riley touch to all that he can see.

And it was glorious.

Anyhow.

I want a tablet.  I’ve finally come to the realisation that I do want a tablet.  I don’t want the iPad, however - not because I’m an Apple hater, but because I can’t do any external memory.

I know there are ways around it, but I’m not really interested in hacking it.  I’ve done that to my iPod, and it’s not all that stable anymore - but the features of the jailbreak outstrip the cons, so I live with it.  But I really want the ability to take the memory card from my phone, put it in said tablet, and do stuff with it.

So maybe I’m looking at a Playbook, but I don’t really want to be bound to a Blackberry.

But furthermore, as we wandered around the car show today, I realised how impractical a tablet would be for every day use.  I watched my father try to take notes about the cars we were looking at and I thought how nice it would be if he could take a picture of the car, and make immediate notes on the car.  However, it’s still easier to use a pen and paper.  I don’t need a special pen, I don’t need a bulky tablet.  It’s simple.  And it works.

So where would I use a tablet?  Well, there’s a small period in my day where I’m at home, maybe working on dinner, or cleaning up from dinner, or watching the kids have bath, where it would be nice to have a decent web browser available that isn’t my full-blown laptop.  Look up recipes, videos to play for the kids, etc.  There’s also a period where I’m on transit where it would be nice to have a smaller form factor to use.  I might actually get my posts done on time...

But none of these “reasons” really bear any weight, so it almost seems pointless.  When I got my iPod Touch, I was keenly aware that I had at least two other devices that could play MP3s for me while in transit on my bike.  But the iPod had apps, more storage, a better interface (and once I jailbroke it, an even better interface!), so it came out as the winner, and it’s been really well used.  I’m looking at a replacement unit just as a hardware upgrade, not because I need more storage or the camera, but because the thing is just slow now.  In Apple terms, it’s 2, coming up on 3 generations old, and equally as old in years.  That’s a lot given the latest changes in technology.

While my iPod filled the need for “entertainment” during transit (I say “entertainment” because it’s not music that I listen to..), I don’t have that void that a tablet would fill.  I, uh, don’t not have anything to do while I take the bus.  I do have my laptop for looking stuff up when I’m at home.  I do have a book that I can use on the bus.

So I want a tablet for no good reason.

Damn.
