July 7 - My Little Foremen

July 7 - My Little Foremen

Ah, yes, nothing quite like busting your ass outside while your kids look on and laugh.  And your wife gets to stay inside and make sure they don't destroy the place.

Not that painting a door (seen left) is really busting my ass, but the subsequent attempt to get it in the door jam didn't exactly go as planned.  More on that later, once I get the door mounted.

So I didn't post on Wednesday, because I literally did not take any pictures on Wednesday.  I checked my phone, I checked my camera, checked Holly's phone..  Nothing.  So, no Wordless Wednesday for you.

My nerd-out continues a bit, though not to the same extent.  I realized the other day that I had closed the port on my firewall that I had left open for Gmail to pick up my email.  Oops.  Once I got that opened up, and dealt with the 400+ emails that were waiting to be read, I got to some more Wualaing.

I had previously rambled on about Wuala, and how I was going to use it to replace Dropbox.  While I'm very much on track to do that, I discovered the joys of running Java apps.

They're not always that stable.

So, launching Wuala today I noticed that my available storage hadn't moved.  Doing some digging, it looks like the storage client wasn't around anymore.  Looks like it wasn't running at all.

Restart the client, and start looking to see what I could do to have it monitored by Nagios.  And monitoring I did!

I had already been running Nagios to keep an eye on how often my Telus equipment is available/not available.  It's overkill for a simple ping check, but it solved the problem with something I didn't have to write.

It also provides a nice platform to babysit Wuala.

Sooo..  Now that I get notified when stuff goes south, hopefully I'll be able to notice a lot sooner!

Incidentally, the IOS app for Wuala is pretty darn good ..  It's a bit weird when I want to read a text file, but PDFs are displayed just fine, as are images (havn't tested any audio yet).  Some of the weirdness may come from the fact that my iPod is about as old at the Arc, but it still does the trick.
