March 20 - A Steel Cut Test

March 20 - A Steel Cut Test

Yes, it's a late post - I'm blaming Heather…

It's race weekend this weekend, which means it's Holly's first timed event, and both of our first 10ks.  I've done more than 10k before, but never an actual 10k specific distance.  If I were running on my own, I gather I'm supposed to run a bit harder than I would on a half.  Who knew? :)

To get ready for the race, I tend to drink up on water, and try to eat things that I know will sit well.  One of the things I do enjoy for breakfast is steel cut oatmeal.  It's nice because it has a bit more flavour than regular microwave oatmeal, but I don't like how long it takes to make them.

Someone, somewhere on my travels had pointed out that you can make them in your rice cooker, so why not?  So that was Saturdays test - Steel cut oatmeal, made in the ricecooker.

The pro: The rice cooker has a very nice smooth non-stick surface.  Cleanup is a breeze.  Another pro: I can set a timer for the thing to have it ready for when I want it!  WIN!

So what we see on the top-left is:

  • 1.25 c steel cut oats
  • 3c water (or filled to the 1 line on the Poridge scale on the rice cooker bowl)
  • 1/4c raisins
  • 1/4c brown sugar
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon

I thought it was good.  The second picture for today is Riley's reaction.  Oh well - Lukah liked it.

After Holly tested it, we agreed that the consistency was off, and there was too much salt.  So for the second attempt, we did:

  • 1 service of steel cut oats (1 cup that comes with the rice bags - about 3/4c)
  • 3c water (same as above)
  • 1/2c raisins
  • 1/2tsp salt
  • 1 heaped tsp cinnamon

Again, Riley didn't approve - he went for mini wheats instead, but Lukah ate up two bowls - so we're calling this a winner.

Race day tomorrow!
