This is a crab, we think. We have been finding pinchers and such on the paths around the lake/ponds/sloughs in our neighborhood for a while, but this is the first one we've found generally intact. And by we, I mean Holly.
We're not really sure where they come from, given that we're not really near any big source of crustaceans. We think that either they've arrived (by some natural means) in the lakes, and since they (the lakes) don't have any natural eco-system, these critters are surviving off the crap in the bottom of the lake and getting brought up by the seagulls and other water fowl that stop here. Either that, or the lakes were stocked with these things in order to keep the crap in the lake down.
Who knows. But, we've gone from finding remains to a whole critter, I guess meaning that there's life in there.
At least, that's my unscientific thought.
